GTA 6 vs GTA 5: The Biggest Differences (and Habits to Drop)

Short answer: GTA 6 vs GTA 5 is not just “bigger map, better graphics”. Based on what Rockstar has shown so far, GTA 6 swaps three protagonists for a two-person crime partnership (Jason and Lucia), raises the wanted level cap from five stars to six, makes police work from witness reports and descriptions, adds a Criminal Profile that tracks how you behave, and turns car theft and robberies into a proper money system. It also leaves last-gen consoles behind: GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.

If you have hundreds of hours in GTA 5 or GTA Online, a lot of your muscle memory will still help. But some old habits will actively get you caught in Leonida. This guide puts the confirmed differences side by side, separates what is official from what is only reported, and ends with the GTA 5 habits you should drop before launch day.

The “Status” column matters. Rockstar has been clear about the release date, platforms, characters and the wanted system. Numbers such as map size or animation counts come from previews and interviews, so treat them as reported until the game is in players’ hands.

Two Partners Instead of Three Strangers

GTA 5’s three leads mostly lived separate lives that crossed during heists. GTA 6 is built around a couple. Rockstar has described the story as Bonnie-and-Clyde style, and the relationship is part of the gameplay, not just the cutscenes.

Character switching returns, and you can swap between Jason and Lucia in free roam as well as in missions. In some missions the two handle different parts of the same job, and previews showed one driving while the other shoots. Outside missions they can travel together, hold hands, message each other and work out at the gym. Rockstar says time spent together builds their bond, but romance does not unlock a special gameplay bonus.

The practical difference: in GTA 5 you switched to escape a boring moment. In GTA 6, who you are playing and whether you are together affects how police see you (more on that below). For full backgrounds on both leads, see our GTA 6 characters guide.

The Wanted System Is the Biggest Change

In GTA 5, police seemed to know about a crime the moment it happened, and escaping mostly meant leaving a circle on the minimap. GTA 6 works differently, according to Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson in an interview reported by GamesRadar+:

  • Crimes need a witness or an alarm. If nobody reports it, police do not instantly appear.
  • Police track four things: your clothes, your face, your car, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Each one shows as an on-screen icon.
  • Six stars, not five. The top end is meant to feel like a manhunt.
  • Red stars mean a search, not a chase. Once you break contact, the stars change colour while officers keep looking for you.
  • Cars are hard to escape in. From around three stars, Rockstar says getting off the road and into alleys is usually the better option.

Criminal Profile: GTA’s First Behaviour Tracker

GTA 5 never judged you. You could cause chaos for an hour and the story played out the same way. GTA 6 adds a Criminal Profile that, according to previews, works a bit like Red Dead Redemption 2’s honour system but is not a simple good-versus-evil meter. Pointless violence counts against you, small positive actions can count the other way, and violence that a mission or robbery requires is treated differently.

Rockstar has not explained exactly what a bad profile does, so we would not assume it locks you out of content. The safe takeaway is that random rampages now have some cost, while planned crimes are what the game expects you to do.

Money: From Stock Market Tricks to Real Hustles

Many GTA 5 players remember the Lester assassination missions and the in-game stock market as the fastest way to get rich. GTA 6 looks more hands-on. Previews showed three main income routes: stealing and reselling cars, robbing stores, and bigger bank-style jobs. Some parts of the story reportedly require you to raise a set amount of cash before you can continue.

  • Car theft has tiers. Older cars can be opened with a slim jim, newer luxury cars need a key cloner, and some tools only arrive later in the game.
  • A phone app scans parked cars and shows value, lock status, alarms and trackers.
  • Damage costs money. A smashed stolen car sells for less, so careful driving pays.
  • Robberies have trade-offs. Blowing a safe is quick but can damage the loot. Slower methods pay more but give police time to arrive.
  • Fences buy stolen valuables and vehicles.

Our tip: in GTA 5 you could ignore money for long stretches. In GTA 6, pick up the habit of checking a car’s value before you take it. A clean mid-range car you can sell is likely worth more than a damaged supercar with a tracker.

A Living World vs a Backdrop

GTA 5’s pedestrians were mostly scenery. In GTA 6, previews describe NPCs that react to things they used to ignore, such as openly carrying a rifle, and some will confront you for following or eavesdropping too long. You can greet or taunt people, defuse or provoke tense moments, and study animals you meet. Each region of Leonida also has its own look and population, which you can read more about in our GTA 6 map breakdown.

Side activities have grown too. The Extended Look showed basketball, pool, fishing, hunting, scuba diving, kayaking, base jumping and a shooting range. Jason and Lucia’s bodies also change with exercise, food and long periods on the run, which GTA 5 only tried in a limited way through stats.

Hardware: GTA 6 vs GTA 5 on Your Console

GTA 5 started on PS3 and Xbox 360 and was later re-released several times, ending with PS5 and Series X|S versions that offer performance modes. GTA 6 starts on current consoles only, and there is no PS4, Xbox One or PC version at launch. That gives it far more detail, but it also means frame rate is a real question. We cover what is known in our GTA 6 60 FPS explainer.

One more practical point: the standard edition costs $79.99 in the US, $20 more than GTA 5 did at launch. Our GTA 6 price guide breaks down Indian pricing and both editions.

5 GTA 5 Habits to Drop Before 19 November

  1. Carjacking everything. It still works when someone is in the driver’s seat, but parked cars with trackers can follow you home. Check before you steal.
  2. Driving away from every chase. At higher stars, on foot is often faster at breaking line of sight.
  3. Wearing one outfit. Police remember clothes now. Keep a spare outfit in your trunk.
  4. Random rampages “for fun”. They feed your Criminal Profile. Save the chaos for when you know what it costs.
  5. Rushing every safe. Fast methods can ruin valuables. If the area is quiet, the slower option may pay more.

Should GTA 5 Players Still Play GTA 5 Before Launch?

Yes, if you enjoy it. The shooting, driving and weapon wheel will feel familiar, and switching characters is the same core idea. But do not spend time grinding GTA Online money expecting it to carry over. Rockstar has not announced any transfer of GTA 5 or GTA Online progress, and the online side of GTA 6 is still unannounced. Our GTA 6 Online explainer tracks what is known.
